Converting One-Way Streets to Two-Way Streets to Improve Transportation Network Efficiency and Reduce Vehicle Distance Traveled

چکیده

Planning scholars have identified economic, safety, and social benefits of converting one-way streets to two-way. Less is known about how conversions could impact vehicular distances traveled—of growing relevance in an era fleet automation, electrification, ride-hailing. We simulate such a conversion San Francisco, California. find that its current street network’s average intra-city trip ~1.7 percent longer than it would be with all two-way streets, corresponding 27 million kilometers annual surplus travel. As transportation technologies evolve, planners must consider different facets network efficiency align local policy design sustainability other societal goals.

A simulated annealing approach to solve the network design of one-way streets: case of Shiraz network

This study is devoted to the formulation of the network design problem of one-way streets and the application of simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to solve this problem for a large real network. It discusses some points of views on one-way street networks, the objective function used for design, the way in which design constraints may be considered, and the traffic problems concerning one-way ...

Are child pedestrians at increased risk of injury on one-way compared to two-way streets?

OBJECTIVES To compare child pedestrian injury rates on one-way versus two-way streets in Hamilton, and examine whether the characteristics of child pedestrian injuries differ across street types. METHODS The rates of injury per child population, per kilometre, per year were calculated by age, sex and socio-economic status (SES). Child, environment and driver characteristics were investigated ...

selecting an optimum configuration of urban one-way and two-way streets using genetic algorithms

optimization is an important methodology for activities in planning and design. the transportation designers are able to introduce better projects when they can save time and cost of travel for project by optimization methods. most of the optimization problems in engineering are more complicated than they can be solved by custom optimization methods. the most common and available methods are he...

Marking Streets to Improve Parking Density

Street parking spots for automobiles are a scarce commodity in most urban environments. The heterogeneity of car sizes makes it inefficient to rigidly define fixed-sized spots. Instead, unmarked streets in cities like New York leave placement decisions to individual drivers, who have no direct incentive to maximize street utilization. In this paper, we explore the effectiveness of two different...
